Unlike most areas of life today where email is the primary communication method, fax is still prevalent in the healthcare industry. There are cost and efficiency concerns associated with fax, however.

As Hugh Gilenson, DataMotion’s Director of Healthcare Business Development explains, direct secure mail is a protocol for Internet communication via email that the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT sponsored starting in 2010. It gives providers the option to use encrypted email (through a regular email platform such as Outlook or Gmail) to transfer health information to providers and patients in a secure, protected way.
