Veterans Speak on Direct for MU2 Success

HISTalkhbOn Thursday, September 4, 2014, DataMotion hosted a webinar presented by HIStalktitled “Meaningful Use Stage 2 (MU2) Veterans Speak Out: Implementing Direct Secure Messaging for Success.” This webinar consisted of a panel of health care industry experts and experienced providers discussing their experiences, lessons learned, and strategies for success attestation for MU2, moderated by Mr. HIStalk, the anonymous editor of the highly regarded health IT news and opinion blog HIStalk.

Panelists included:

  • Darby Buroker, Executive Director, Health Information Exchange Development Information Services, Steward Health Care, LLC.
  • Anne Lara, Ed.D., RN, CPHIMS, Chief Information Officer, Union Hospital of Cecil County, MD
  • Andy Nieto, Health IT Strategist, DataMotion

Andy Nieto began the webinar by giving a comprehensive introduction to Direct Secure Messaging (Direct). He discussed what Direct is, how it affects Meaningful Use, and challenges and strengths associated with implementation. He also discussed where to get started with Direct, and how to determine which HISP you as a provider should use for implementation.

Following Andy’s introduction, Mr. HIStalk moderated the panel of MU2 “veterans,” presenting them with questions from both himself and audience submissions to give attendees a thorough understanding of the Meaningful Use attestation process as well as Direct implementation. Questions posed for panelists by both Mr. HIStalk and the audience Q&A included what they wished they’d known before beginning attestation, describing the process of getting Direct up and running, the impact of new changes by the CMS to Meaningful Use requirements, and visions for the future of Direct. Some of the most interesting insights by panelists included the importance of not underestimating the challenges presented by Meaningful Use, clearing up the confusion associated with Direct, and why attestation is about more than just incentives.
